This time, we had food! Plenty of food, and a lot to celebrate. As members of the Adelante Network arrived, they would place their food item on the buffet table and take their seats. We had menudo, mole, tamales, salad, chicken, deserts, and more. The feeling of the day was of gratitude and eagerness to share in the communal activity of enjoying the gift that each brought with them
After taking the time to get food, complement each other in their culinary skills, or their selection skills for those that brought food from the grocery store, we engaged in an activity of reflection. This particular Wednesday marked the 15th month since the Adelante Network began in 2018. The 15th meeting where agencies and families met together monthly to discuss programming, gaps, and successes. The 15th time that families were viewed as the experts of their own experiences and that they were treated as the leaders they are, and agencies embrace the opportunity to listen carefully and build authentic partnerships with community members.
We answered three questions:
What is a specific and personal change you have experienced with Adelante?
What impact have you seen in your Community in relation to your work with Adelante?
What have you learned from other Adelante participants that has been valuable in your community/work?
The responses were moving, igniting. Tears were shed, and hope was shared.
While there was much to celebrate, there were also points to reflect on. “We have come to learn what the community wants, but yet, the community still has a hard time utilizing the resources,” said one participant.
Another spoke about the need for a safe space. “We get to spend time with people from our own cultures in our own language. That doesn’t happen anywhere else.”
One participant, Nancy, reflected on her own personal growth, and shared a profound realization, “It woke the leader inside me. It brought out who I am. A Leader.”
From there, we also celebrated the communal growth that these families experienced. “Adelante has transformed families into community leaders.”
As Adelante enters into its 16th month, the desire and will to ensure its sustainability grows. The members, both families and agencies, are committed to the continued success of Adelante and will engage in a sustainability planning session that will be led by the family members and supported by the agencies. When we look back at what we sought to do and see the actual impact Adelante has had – created a space where “everyone has a voice no matter their title or where they are from, we are all equal” – we sit, reflect, celebrate, and act.

¡Esta vez sí tuvimos comida! Mucha comida, y mucho que celebrar. A medida que llegaban los miembros de la Red Adelante, colocaban su platillo para compartir en la mesa del buffet y tomaban asiento. Hubo menudo, mole, tamales, ensalada, pollo, postres y más. Las emociones del día fueron de gratitud y entusiasmo por compartir en esta actividad comunitaria disfrutando el regalo que cada uno trajo consigo.
Después de tomar tiempo para servirse comida, alagarse mutuamente en sus habilidades culinarias, o sus habilidades de selección para aquellos que trajeron comida de la tienda, nos enfocamos a una actividad de reflexión. Este miércoles en particular marcó el mes 15 desde que la Red Adelante comenzó en 2018. La reunión número 15 donde las agencias y las familias se conectaron mensualmente para discutir programación, brechas y éxitos. La 15va vez en que las familias fueron vistas como los expertos de sus propias experiencias y que fueron tratadas como los líderes que son, y donde las agencias tuvieron la oportunidad de escuchar atentamente y construir asociaciones auténticas con los miembros de la comunidad.
Presentamos tres preguntas para reflexionar:
1. ¿Cuál es un cambio específico y personal que ha experimentado con Adelante? 2. ¿Qué impacto ha visto en su comunidad en relación con su trabajo con Adelante? 3. ¿Qué ha aprendido de otros participantes de Adelante que ha sido valioso en su comunidad o trabajo?
Las respuestas fueron remecedoras, poderosas. Compartimos lágrimas y esperanza.
Si bien había mucho que celebrar, también había puntos sobre los que reflexionar. "Hemos llegado a aprender lo que la comunidad quiere, sin embargo, a la comunidad todavía le cuesta utilizar los recursos", dijo un participante.
Otro habló sobre la necesidad de un espacio seguro. "Podemos pasar tiempo con personas de nuestras propias culturas en nuestro propio idioma. Eso no sucede en ningún otro lugar".
Una participante, Nancy, reflexionó sobre su propio crecimiento personal, y compartió una profunda reflexión: "Despertó al líder dentro de mí. Sacó a relucir quién soy. Una líder."
A partir de ahí, también celebramos el crecimiento comunal que experimentaron estas familias. "Adelante ha transformado a las familias en líderes comunitarios".
A medida que Adelante entra en su mes número 16, crece el deseo y la voluntad de asegurar su sustentabilidad. Los miembros, tanto familias como agencias, están comprometidos con el éxito continuo de Adelante y participarán en una sesión de planificación estratégica que será dirigida por familias y apoyada por las agencias. Cuando miramos hacia atrás, hacia lo que buscamos hacer inicialmente, y vemos el impacto real que ha tenido Adelante – crear un espacio donde "todo el mundo tiene una voz sin importar su título o de dónde son, todos somos iguales" – nos sentamos, reflexionamos, celebramos, y actuamos.
